Join us for an evening of sharing from two past recipients of the VRA Learning Journey Grant. We will hear the stories of how a preschool and a grade 6 classroom reimagined their play and learning spaces.

A Learning Journey of Children, Teachers, Families and Community of Friendly Forest Preschool in Anmore, BC.
Inspired by intelligent materials, thought-provoking questions, and the time to explore independently, the children journeyed from discussions and searching for meaning together through visual representations of their ideas, culminating in the creation of 3D models of the community play space. Eventually, with the collaboration of families, our preschool garden was transformed into a space representing a year’s worth of children’s investigations.
Growing Sideways: Reimagining the Image of the Pre-Teen Girl
York House School - Vancouver, BC
Growing Sideways is a window into the image of the pre-teen girl. The Reggio Emilia Approach to learning is often applied to the context of Early Childhood Education. This research project applied the concepts of the Reggio Emilia Approach to a middle school classroom in the heart of Vancouver at York House School. Over the course of one school year, two Grade 6 teachers took on reimagining their classroom spaces through the lens of their students. Engaging in challenging conversations, putting aside bias, and challenging colonial conceptions of how classrooms should be, were a few of the ways in which this project sought to disrupt conventional learning patterns of the 21st century. Central to this work is how the pre-teen girl sees herself in her classroom spaces. Do our classrooms either mirror or contradict their evolving identities and impact their learning?
